What type of sporting parent are you?

Recently, one of my children’s sporting Whatsapp chats (for parents) blew up. And it wasn’t the first time this has occurred. My husband and I observe open-mouthed in shock 🫢when this happens. It got me thinking about Olympians and other sporting stars, and wondering what their parents were like on the sidelines.

But firstly, what type of sporting parent are you?

  • The Clueless: You don’t understand anything about the sport your child is enrolled in, and/or never know when training is on or where games are being played. Perpetually running late and forgetting gear. No judgement.

  • The Socialiser: You’re more interested in socialising with other parents on the sideline. You never know what the score is, and often miss your own child’s exploits because you weren’t looking. It is what it is.

  • The Spectator: You’re there to watch your child compete. You’re interested in the game even if you don’t know all the rules, and don’t care much for chit-chat on the sidelines. Probably also an introvert.
